Install Avanti Software

Avanti installation procedure

Dec. 29, 2000
Got email from Pete at Avanti with news that 2000.4 is out. The download worked perfectly and the files could be installed. With the avanti files, you need to unzip and extract the files in the /net/edg/disk3/avanti directory, so that the 2000.4 directory is created. Since the unzipping and extracting is effectively the installation for Avanti products, you cannot unzip them in say your home directory and then tell them to be installed someplace else.

After all three files have been extracted, cd to the 2000.4 directory and run bin/config. Close the first window that comes up, it's just a warning about the new license file that is required. In the next window, make sure the following are checked:
-Configure AvanWaves
-Configure Star-Hspice
-Expand tar files ALL
Then configure.

When finished, edit the following files:
/etc/dt/config/Xsession.d/edg
/usr/sbin/licensing startup (on frodo only)

Before restarting the licensing, copy the license file from the old version of the Avanti software to the new version and be sure to edit it to reflect its new location.

The 2000.2 version of the software came on a cd and could not be installed due to a problem with the names of the files on the cd. I contacted Pete McFarland (peter_mcfarland@avanticorp.com) who set up an ftp account for me and placed the files I needed there. After ftping them, I unzipped and untarred them in /net/edg/disk3/avanti. The directory 2000.2 was created and from that directory, I ran bin/config to configure the programs.

Next, I copied license.dat from the 99.2 directory and edited the path to the avantd daemon. I edited the license startup file on frodo (/usr/sbin/licensing/ startup) to reflect the new home of the Avanti software. I touched /net/edg/dis k3/avanti/2000.2/avanti.log and changed permissions to 666. And I edited /etc/d t/config/Xsession.d/edg. The file /etc/PATH doesn't need to be edited because t here is nothing there pointing to the Avanti software. The software is put on t he path, but it is done through the file that is source in the edg startup scrip t. The file that is sourced is /net/edg/disk3/avanti/2000.2/bin/kshrc.meta. Fi nally, I restarted the licenses and was all set. I wish that they would always do the installation this way.

  • Mount avanti cd

  • Use the PFS mounting procedure:
  • pfs_mountd &

  • pfsd &

  • pfs_mount -t rrip -x unix /dev/dsk/c1t2d0 /cdrom

  • (You'll get an error message saying: pfs_mount: /etc/pfs_fstab: No such file or directory--Just ignore it.)
  • Run /cdrom/install_dir/avanti_install

  • Directory to install to: /net/mentor/disk2/avanti

  • When finished, run /net/mentor/disk2/avanti/98.4/bin/config

Notes The installation will say that there is already stuff in the installation directory, since this is where the old version also resides. Still say OK to using it, because the installation program will make a new version directory, which is how it should be installed.

Next make sure to edit the following files:
  • /etc/PATH
  • Don't need anything in PATH, it's taken care of in edg script
  • /etc/dt/config/Xsession.d/edg

  • /usr/sbin/licensing startup (on frodo only)

  • Products chosen:
  • Hspice docs

  • Hspice for HP-UX

  • AvanWaves for HP-UX

  • If, while running the program, an error message about a missing library appears, creation of a link may solve the problem. Awaves/Mwaves looks to /mnt/disk3/avanti/99.2/pa for its libraries (printenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH). Instead of adding another directory to LD_LIBRARY_PATH and then logging out and back in, create a link in the pa directory to the missing library. This was done with 128_0p8.lib, which is used in the demo and is located in /net/edg/disk3/avanti/99.2/demo/awaves/demo.

    NT Information
The NT machines use the license on the HPs to run the Avanti software. It should be listed as 7182@frodo.
